#220: New Orleans Piano- Professor Longhair

Listened to: MP3

Major props to the father of 40’s and 50’s era piano blues. I would’ve never heard Professor Longhair had it not been this blog, and I was ready to dismiss it for that reason alone, but with regard to influential artists, the Professor ranks up there with Elvis and Ray. This album (admittedly a compilation, which makes me reticent) captures an era and aspect of music virtually forgotten, but this music is just as enjoyable today as it was 60 years ago. They’re all short, jumpy jams, but they’re all fantastically formed, and thoroughly entertaining. His wailing voice may grate on you, but I think this relic of a bygone age is fantastic, and doesn’t at all receive the respect it deserves in the pantheon of great records. Maybe Tarantino will use it in a film and get it the respect it deserves (I can definitely picture it).

Sorry to keep it short today, but I got a busy day ahead of me. In conclusion, though, definitely look this album up, readers. If this is truly the sound of New Orleans, then I sure as hell know where I’m headed as soon as I get some money.
