#298: Master Of Reality- Black Sabbath

Listened to: MP3

Opening with a stereo-altered cough, and moving into “Sweet Leaf”, with a riff that would make Zeppelin crap their pants, it’s easy to tell why this is considered the first “stoner rock” album. Hell, the opening track is written about pot. Black Sabbath seemed to break away from horror rock and really wanna display their musical abilities on this album, and that they did. All the instrumentation is miles ahead of their other big albums. “After Forever” charges in on a triumphant riff that seems ahead of its day in sound and style, ad is totally unlike the Sabbath anybody but true metal fans can conceive. Embryo is the first instrumental of the album, and goes into that real medieval vibe most metal bands really got into, and leads really well into the sick ass riffs of “Children Of The Grave”. I like the guitars on this track so much, I just described them as “sick ass riffs”. Yeah, that just happened. “Orchid” continues the medieval instrumentation thing, and this time progresses into “Lord Of This World” quite eloquently. Ever think I’d use the term eloquent when talking about Sabbath? “Lord Of This World” adds more of a classic sound to Ozzy’s voice, but it’s not a particularly thrilling track. “Solitude” has the most mystical feel of any track thus far, and I gotta be honest, I definitely didn’t think I’d like it as much as I do. The album ends on the 6 minute “Into the Void”, which seems to be the perfect bookend to “Sweet Leaf”.

All in all, this albums a good one, with some tracks even better than the debut, and highly worth checking out.
